Question:

do i need my wheels balanced ?

i got a 1990 accord.when i let go of the steering wheel, the car moves to the right a lot, and when im on the freeway it gets scary because i feel the car moving side to side when i reach speeds of 50+. is this problem my wheels not being balanced?? or is it that i need them aligned?? what could it be? i want to take care of the problem because its scary drving like this.and how much would it cost to get the job done??? i live in california, southbay

Answer:

if the wheels need to be balanced? you will feel the vibration through your steering wheel at higher speeds! The symptons of wheels neading to be aligned are: # Uneven or rapid tire wear # Pulling or drifting away from a straight line # Wandering on a straight level road
No to the balancing. Balancing gets rid of vibrations. Did this happen all of a sudden? One day fine and the next it was doing this? First thing to do is check the air levels. I would strongly advise having a tire guy check for a seperated tire. This is where the tread (the outer layer) seperates from the tire and starts to squirm around. Needing an alignment normally doesn't effect things this much it just wears out the tires faster. You might not even feel a bad alignment.
it sounds like your wheels are out of alignment. If you wheels were out of balance you would be getting vibration coming through the steering wheel. Front wheels out of alignment will pull your car to the side when you let go of the wheel or even when driving with your hands on the wheel. A wheel alignment should cost less than $100.00
