Question:

do places like midas, merlins, car dealers clean brake systems before beginning work on them?

I would like to know if most brake shops and dealers actually use brake cleaning machines to clean brake rotors, drums, pads, calipers etc BEFORE beginning work on them to minimize their exposure to the brake dust? or if they just remove the wheel, and go to work on the brakes?

Answer:

this has been on the news b4.brake shops work on them and start to charge u for EVERY LITTLE thing.if u want the brake rotors, drums, pads, calipers etc to be cleansd they would most likely charge u for each.other wise they would just go to work on them. P.S if it needed to get replaced they wouldnt tell u unless u ask becuz they want u to come baq to spend more money.so ask b4 hand.like i sed it was on the news
Remove the wheel first (disc brakes), wheel and drum (drum brakes). I've seen them use water to rinse off the brake dust. Doesn't harm the brakes any more than driving through deep water.
In the 80's a tool began showing up in all shops that wheeled under a wheel to clean all the dust off before starting. Before that guys used compressed air. I wouldn't work anywhere that didn't have a cleaning machine now. But a couple cans of brake clean and a drain pan with a mask on works ok. The government sent 'Right to Know' class instructors to every shop with books and binders containing information on every chemical you ran into. They were kept in the service managers office and never get very dirty. These chemicals melted gloves. I was doing one trans after another at one shop and my kidneys shut down for a few days. Thank God for dialysis.
