Question:

Does a ram air intake have any real effect?

i have a 96 3.8l v6 camaro that i am looking to get a little more power from (but not v8 kind of power, or mileage). i i am planning on doing either a cam or a (used) conservative turbo setup. both of those are far in the future though. in the meantime, i was wondering about a ram air setup. i havfe not done any research on ram air mods for my car and i dont even know if there is one made. before i spend a ton of time researching this mod, coudl you say, as a general statement, if a ram air intake would do anything (at all) and would it be anywhere worth the price to do it? thanks

Answer:

You get about 1% HP increase at 150 MPH for the ram effect For a street car, you're only doing it for the cold-air benefit. The only reason I had the Ram-Air hood on my Camaro was due to an accident and they other guy's insurance had to replace my hoodso it was pretty much a freebie
Look, you want the truth GM has made everything from about 1986 and up with factory cold air setup. Aftermarket cold air systems does nothing, just adds a shiny pipe Most ram air systems does nothing on most cars. Yes ram air is true and yes it works but you do not even start to see a benifit from ram air effect untill 90 mph speeds and will not get the full gain untill around 140 mph or so. You may be able to gain alittle power by moving your air inlet to a diff spot. Stock is factory cold air but not in the best of places. Use an infared temp gun Drive you car for 20 miles or so and measure the temp of your air filter, vs outside of car, vs other spots around engine bay. You can pick up 1% power per 10* change in inlet temp So if you can move the filter somewhere 20* cooler you will gain 4 HP
