First of all I must tell you todays brake pads and brake systems do NOT contain asbestos, they contain alloys and metals designed to absorb and dissipate heat and create a strong friction. This does not make it any less dangerous, any particulate that gets into your lungs can cause irritation and illness, but some are more dangerous than others. Brake dust can be particularly harmful and should be handled with caution, and I'm saying that as a person and not a mechanic. Breathing brake dust can cause a range of health problems, some of which do not manifest until years after you have been exposed. These include shortness of breath, lung disease and cancer, that's why at my shop we are very careful where we breath and where we put our hands after working on brakes!To reduce your risk of inhaling brake dust, take some basic precautions when removing a 'wheels or working on brakes. Use a HEPA filter-equipped vacuum to remove visible dust from surfaces. Wear a face mask if possible; and wash your hands thoroughly before eating, drinking or smoking. Also using brake cleaner helps remove dust the best just keep it away from paint it destroys some clear coats on older cars. Also I must suggest you where a light mask when working on wheel where you know their is brake dust currently and you need to do vigorous scrubbing or rubbing to remove it. Also to answer your other question I do recommend washing the cloth used on the wheels separately from the rest, you don't want that abrasive brake pad material on the other clothes as well.
