if you like them fried on the outside then fry them a little and then cook them in the oven to make sure they are cooked all the way through
hardwiring will cost about $100 per detector or less. It's not something that needs to wait until you re-do the electrical. Do they need to be hardwired in your area? Probably not for older units but you will have to check with your building enforcement.
