I would say cotton. It's very soft to the touch and wool can tend to be scratchy. If wool itches adults, imagine how uncomfortable it is to a baby.
something soft and comfortable, but that doesn't get hot if you lay on it for awhile. Natural fibers if possible. Machine washable and doesn't hold stains easily.
