Question:

Ford Aerostar EXPERTS - What common issues does the engine have ?

I just picked up a pretty good 1997 Aerostar 6 cyl.It drives pretty good to be honest !I have always been a shade tree mechanic and done my own repairs - even cylinder heads , timing belts and so on, so I know my way around an engine a little.I work on Motorola radios and we ALWAYS have common stuff go bad on each model radio. I spot them in a second and see them over and over.So I come to those in the know on this vehicle. What common stuff should I expect to be bad - sensors , wires, connectors, loose bolts , adjustments etc .My buddy had a truck where he could put a jumper on the OBD connector and then read the check engine light flash‘s to diagnose any issues - it eliminated the need for a OBD reader and was quite useful .Any tips or hints are appreciated !

Answer:

Chances are that the light came on from a different problem altogether than trans or fuel filter. THe check engine light does not connect to these, I don't think. These engines, since they were designed by Porsche for Ford, require the finest oils to keep the camshaft adjustming mechaism working as it should. It is your best interest to loate, remove, and clean your IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. Also clean the throttle body and check for continuity in your PCV valve and hose. If this were MY car, it would only see Mobil One 0W-30 oil, EVER. Perhaps the newer Pennzoil Ultra, or ELF from France. If you should happen to have your engine codes read, and it says camhaft sensor, realize that improper oil use is the REAL cause, and not a failing sensor that requires replacement. Power wash your engine, keep it clean, do a mild sludge removal treatment, and switch over to Mobil One, like I recommend above.
wow craig wrong wrong wrong flowmasters suck horribly and no one wants glass packs on a higher performance vehicle look magnaflows offer a fantastic exhaust system for a little cheaper if you have the extra money i would recommend either a Corsa or Borla exhaust system Also SLP loudmouth II have nearly a cult following among Camaro/Firebird owners
Glasspacks are definitely loud but you are going to get the redneck jacked up truck sound from them. Magnaflows are definitely good as I have them on my 6.0L Vortec. They have a low mean rumble that says horsepower and not redneck. As far as loud and high end, Borla are as loud as you can get and still sound good but I am not sure if those are in your price range. I have had glasspacks on a Chevy 2500 with 350 engine and now I have the Magnaflows on my current truck. My friend had Borla's on his Camaro SS. The glasspacks will sound awful on your car, the magnaflows sound great, and although the Borla's sound great too, conversation while driving will be tough. LOL

Well I agree with the people saying no glass packs I love the sound of a Borla but they are expensive I prefer the Corsa cat backs still pricey but not as bad as a Borla and they sound drop dead sexy
