Question:

HELP! Does anyone know the trick to getting the large spring back in on 97 Monte Carlo brake system drums?

Replacing shoes and I have never ran into a large black spring that goes on the bottom to hold shoes in place. Maybe their is a tool that makes it easier. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

There is a tool that makes it easier.not super easy, but easier nonetheless. You can find a brake spring tool at any auto parts store for about $8. If you have trouble finding it just ask a rep in the store, most of them sell a pretty high volume of these tools ;) Now, it can be done without the tool of course. Attach the spring to the bottom of one shoe on the bottom (this large spring is usually the last thing installed) and use a strong pair of needle nose pliers to pull it over to the corresponding hole in the other shoe. It usually works best to work from left to right.i.e. you'll be pulling the spring to the right to get it to mate up with the other shoe. It will probably snap back a few times before you get it but rest assured it can be done. Most of the guys in my shop don't touch the brake spring tool.it can help but it can also be just as difficult as good ol' fashioned arm power coupled with a strong set of needle nose. On many vehicles the spring tool is so oddly shaped it's impossible to get it where it needs to go. I'd give it another shot without the tool, if you really feel like you can't get it done then spring for the $8-$10 tool. Hope this helps!
put the bottom spring on before you install the shoe to backing plate. you only have to secure top springs.
My wager without seeing it may be some thing to do with the BTSI sensor placed on your midsection console or close on your guidance column based what it has. yet another reason would desire to be the brake swap which sends the sign to the BTSI. the two way, feels like some thing in the shift lock equipment. GM makes use of a lock equipment to circumvent the shifter from being moved till the base line is in the on place and the brake pedal depressed for protection. good success
