~Is it okay for a guinea pig to eat their bedding? (Not hay, I mean the Carefresh kind.)~Can I buy hay bedding in a pet store? (More likely Petco?)
Guinea pigs sometimes eat small amounts of bedding. Your piggie should not be eating large amounts. Hay should not be used as bedding. It is not absorbent and becomes wet and stinky very fast. Carefresh, aspen shavings, or KILN DRIED pine shavings work well. Do not use regular pine shavings or cedar.
More than likely, it isn't eating it's bedding just chewing and gnawing on it, which is okay, because most bedding that is made for guinnea pigs, rabbits, hampsters and other small animals are going to be non toxic to them. However, I have found that the best option for bedding for my guinnea pig is aspen shavings. Be SURE not to get pine or cedar because the oils on them can be harmful for their respiratory system. Aspen shavings can be bought at most pet stores or Petco, it is pretty affordable, and also helps alot with the odor. Good Luck, Hope that I've helped.
You would most likely have more luck finding it at your local feed and seed store. However hay really is not that good for bedding as it is not very absorbent. You will have to change the cage every 4 days or so. All guinea pigs chew on their bedding it is just part of being a guinea pig.I truly do not think they actually ingest that much of it. I also have found that if i was careful not to let them run out of the timothy hay they did not have the tendency to chew on the bedding. They just have an innate need to chew so if they have hay they will chew on that and satisfy that need for the most part. With guinea pigs the more you can reproduce their natural habitat the heather and happier they will be. Hope this helps, enjoy your guinea pig
~Is it okay for a guinea pig to eat their bedding? (Not hay, I mean the Carefresh kind.) ~Some Guinea Pigs sometimes will nibble on their bedding, but I would not allow then to eat pig clumps of bedding. ~Can I buy hay bedding in a pet store? (More likely Petco?) ~ You can buy timothy hay there (the kind they eat) but i have not herd of a store selling it as bedding. Don't Use it as Bedding, It's Not absorbent, and will smell horrible if urinated in.
Yes! I had that same question because my little oreo eats his bedding when it's desperate:) Just ask a pet store clerk or check the label if it is toxic or non-toxic. I have the carefresh advanced. You can buy the bedding at petsmart or petco. :) Hopes this helps you! Jaymee
