i put granulated lime on my lawn, straight out of the bag it smelled like stale beer. but that went away once it was spread.
no, it has no smell but the dust as your laying it can be very hard to deal with, I wear a mask since I lime the under part of my deck where my dog pen is actually at. I also use it to help with fleas in front yard and brick sidewalk for ants. Doing the front is not as bad for breathing since I'm not confined under the deck with little or no open air. I use an old colander or coffee can with holes punched in it. When doing the dog pen, I usually leave my dog in the house or under our tree in the back yard for several hours for the lime to soak in or do its job so to speak.
