Could you have hard wired alarms with battery backups? When one goes off all the others will go off at the same time. I have never heard of 8 battery powered alarms going off at the same time unless there was a fire or heavy smoke in the building. Battery alarms work individually and are not connected to each other to set them all off at the same time. It sounds like you have one faulty alarm and it is sending a signal to the others. Try removing one alarm at a time to find the bad one. It could also be going off because of high humidity picking up pollutants in the air and going off. Try disconnecting the ones that are in the basement or nearest the laundry room first. Also check for any in an attic. Check to see if they have 3 wires in the alarm, a black, a white a red or yellow wire if so then they are operating on line voltage. The batteries only are used for a back up if you lose power to the house. The NEC (National Electrical Code) and National Fire Marshalls recommends replacing all alarms after 5 to 7 years.
