Question:

How to I join two copper pipes where one had expanded and the sleeve doesnt fit? Theyre both 1/2 inch. one expanded over winter.?

a copper pipe to my garage split over winter but I can t fit a sleeve over top to sweat it to my other pipe which connects to the spigot. I cut out where it split. the outside diameter of the swollen pipe is 17mm, whereas the inside of a joining sleeve is only 15.5mm - any way to stretch a sleeve without fancy tools? Grinding things down didn t seem to work.

Answer:

over at the home improvement store, you look for a non metallic sleeve that clamps onto both sides. Tell the assistant in plumbing what you're trying to do. This solution is NOT for potable [drinking] water, only for washing/gardening water. The better solution is to replace all of the expanded pipe -- what happened is water inside the pipe froze and enlarged the pipe -- this inherently makes it brittle and subject to leaking at every join [plus in the middle]. When you do this replacement, be sure to include a shutoff at the edge of the warmed area [preferably inside the warm area but we can't always get what we want] and drain. This line needs to be turned off and drained to prepare for future winters.
You have to cut it back, more then likely where it has expanded is damaged anyways. Depending on condition, you may be able to swag it also.
just cut out a section and replace it you just have to use 2 couplings
