The faucets/valves feeding our washing machine have been leaking. We‘re trying to replace the compression fitting on a quarter-turn, 1/2 compression valve, but the ferrule/olive/metal ring from the old fitting is still stuck on the wall pipe, which means we can‘t get the bolt off either since it‘s behind the ferrule.Tried prying the bolt with a hammer to make the ferrule slide, but no luck. It‘s stuck pretty good, and there seems to be really old putty or something around it, too. The space is kinda tight to use a hack saw on the bolt, plus that would still leave the problem of the stuck ferrule.Any suggestions or miracle cures for this kind of thing?
You don't remove the ferrule. When you tighten the nut, it squeezes the ferrule into the pipe and deforms it. Clean the crap off it and try to tighten it again. If that doesn't fix it, You may have to remove some of the wall material and replace the pipe. It is not a good idea to have a fitting inside the wall. Everything in the wall should be soldered. Some shoddy plumber used those compression fittings all over my housing developement and there has been a lot of trouble.
There is a tool to remove the ferrule from the pipe. You can ask a plumber to borrow the tool or purchase it from a plumbing supply house. Do not cut pipe you will not have enough room to install another compression fitting.
