agreement with DavidK above. Hot lye is nothing to mess with. The two basic ingrdients are oil and lye, but the oil can come form any number of sources. The type of oil you use will determine how hard the soap is, how well it will foam, and how well it will provide softening of the skin. Also, as DavidK said, there are many books available out there. Look in the Crafts section of your favorite bookstore.
I'm a food technologist who works in the food industry, so I should be able to answer your question. That reflective material is actually a number of layers of material, usually resins, plastics and a thin metallic layer, designed to keep oxygen out of the product and to ensure that the product is sterile. It all has to do with shelf life and keeping the product safe and consumable. The reflective part provides an oxygen impenetrable barrier. Oxygen is one of the main reasons why food goes bad, goes rancid or degrades. So if you can keep the bag filled with nitrogen gas (which is what is pumped into the bag) you can displace oxygen and thus extend the shelf life of the product.
