They take a long time to decompose (between 75 to 10,000 years) they leech carconogens into the water table, they are harmful to wildlife(like animals getting caught in those six pack holders) they produce harmful smoke when burned.that's all i can think of right now. cheers
plastics are mainly bad because they never decompose, at least not in a realistic amount of time. That means that once they are made, they're here for good, taking up space and being more trash we have to deal with. Also, if plastics are burned, they produce toxic fumes which are not good for the environment. There are also cases of animals joking on things like plastic bags and getting caught in other plastic materials, if they are just left around. Plastics are also made from petroleum products and some people would argue this isn't good because we are trying to use less oil. I would guess that the best plastics to use, if you had to use plastics, would be the ones made from reusable material, like corn (there are some). Or plastics that are recyclable. And of course, make sure you properly dispose of plastic when you are done (in the trash). Plastics have done more to save energy and help the environment than people think, actually. While they have negative effects like the ones i mentioned earlier, there are many positives. Plastics are much much lighter that other packaging materials, and this accounts for thousands and thousands of gallons of oil when you add up everything that is shipped. Plastics are also a lot thinner, making it possible to ship many more plastics bags (for example), than paper bags.
