I'm not understanding how hard you press down on your bass guitar strings. Do you need to press all the way down to the neck or just until the string touches the fret. I'm not sure cause for me pressing them to the neck seams nearly impossible and it seams more natural to press them down to the fret. Which is correct?
Well, just depends on how you want it to sound. Is you want it rich and thick and full of open sound, hold onto it with your dear life. The less you hold it down, the more distorted it sounds.
You press the string down, just behind the fret, until the string touches the fret and is fretted.
