I hope to get a school bus to convert to a motorhome, I have one which I could get for free but it might have brake problems. How much would a brake job cost, best and worst case.

Just Google Bessemer Process. You'll learn more about this stuff than you thought possible.
At a truck shop. A basic 4 wheel brake job including shoes and drums can run anywhere from 5-800 dollars depending on the make of the bus. This can get substantially higher depending on how deep the job will go. I have done full brake system replacements that have run above $2000. Take it to a shop and have them do an estimate on it to get a good idea on what your getting into.
Depending how long it has sit. You have air valves, chambers that the diaphragms that's probably rotted out, plus your drums, along with your pads. If you have not worked on a heavy truck, I would advise you not to. Depending on the year of the bus, the rear breaks , you have to remove the axles to get the drums off. Not to mention, the drums are heavy. As for the steering axle brakes, There are many versions of braking systems on the steering axle, like wedge brakes, we we moved the whole axle , and replaced with another axle, because wedge brakes are faulty brakes system. There are many variables, so take it to someone that knows what they are doing.
