Answer:

For the best answers, search on this site shorturl.im/avb26 Stores often just don't sell short lengths. People who are doing plumbing don't usually need only short lengths. If they do, they buy it longer and cut it to fit what they are doing. If stores were to cut 2 feet off a 12' length so you can have 10 feet of it, someone who needs a 12' length isn't going to buy what's left and the store could wait a long time for a customer who needs exactly the 2 feet that was left. The shorter the length, the more you are going to pay per foot. All you can do is see which stores have lengths in stock closest to what you need Where did you get $100 for 6' of 1/2 pipe? The Home Hardware website shows 6' of 1/2 type M copper pipe for $10.49(and 3' for $5.99), but type M seems to be the only one they sell at less than 12' long. If retail stores in your area don't sell the lengths you want, you might try a metal salvage company, or a house demolition company because some of them sell used building materials, or a Habitat for Humanity Restore. But don't expect any of them to sell you exactly the length you need. You buy what they have and cut it yourself. Copper pipe in the larger sizes can be expensive. Don't expect any super bargains on it even at salvage places. They know exactly what it's worth and aren't going to be giving it away. Copper straight out of the mines is selling right now for about $3.40/ lb before they make it into anything. Consider how much a 2 foot length of 2 pipe weighs and you'll see why it costs what it does.
