Question:

How often is too often to get your hair pressed?

Please, no suggestions about perms because I absolutely refuse to get another perm...Only interesed in pressed hair solutions...I have been natural for slightly over 2 years. I have been going to a salon to get my hair pressed, but I am wondering if every two weeks (twice a month) is too often. She does the new school pressing where she blow dries it straight and then straightens the hair with a ceramic flat iron--she does not actually use the hot comb. I am very satisfied with how it looks and feels, but I'd like to know if once every two weeks is too often for hair to be pressed/ flat-ironed.

Answer:

I don't think it's too frequent. In fact, when I used to press my hair (I'm thinking about going back to it too), I did it once a week. A lot of deep conditioning and heat protectanct, but it still looked great and grew healthfully. I got a texturizer only because it cuts down on the amount of time it takes to do my hair, but I am seriously considering going back to the press. I didn't know about this new school pressing. They can get that flat iron all the way down to the root of the hair without a comb?? Wow...
I think every two weeks is fine! I used to do that then switched to once or twice a week which was a bad idea. Unless you feel your hair is thinning/breaking/feeling dry then maybe you should try to do it less. Most of all, moisture your hair with a deep conditioner once a week.
If you keep your hair moisturized this is not too much pressing. I flat iron my hair every week and my hair is noticebly healthy. Also, keep your ends trimmed regularly. If you do notice breakage, switch to a hairstyle that doesn't require a lot of combing (i.e. wraps, braids, roller sets etc.) Hope it helps!
I press my hair every Friday and it still look fine. Maybe after a decade I will certainly detect some damage. But right now, its just perfect. Just make sure you shampoo and condition it with Pentene. It works fine on my hair.
