Question:

How to replace a rear bicycle axle?

I have a 20 x 1.75‘ rim and i need a new axle does it matter what kind I get. How would I also remove the old one, links please.

Answer:

It depends on the type of gearing you have. If it is a internal geared hub, it is too complex a job. If it has 5 or more gears in the rear cassette, it is pretty easy. The older or less expensive bikes will have a freewheel with gears attached that screws off the hub opposite direction as the wheel normally turns. This requires a freewheel removal tool purchased from the bike shop, bring the wheel down so you get the right one (there must be at least 10 types). You will also need a chain whip, to prevent the freewheel from just freewheeling as you turn the removal tool in the correct direction. After the freewheel is off, remove one lock nut off the axel (may require a set of lock nut wrenches, but not always) and unscrew the cone from that side, then remove the axel. Back to the bike store and get the correct length and thread axel. The axel itself is very cheap, probably $1.00 to $5.00.
pay money to the guy at the local bicycle shop. he is not making enough money. he needs weed and ramen noodles. pay him money and get your bike fixed.
The rim has nothing to do with the axle. The axle you need to buy will depend on the type of hub you have on your wheel. How to change it will also depend on the type of hub.
