I have an HP Presario CQ60 Laptop which recently stopped working. I had it plugged in with the charger just about 24/7 so it might be my fault. i dont know if the computer itself is broken or just the charger. I looked at it once when it was plugged in and noticed the screen was dim and it was not charging, then eventually the laptop itself just died and theres no way for me to turn it back on and when I try to plug the charger in with it, it does nothing. I went to Staples where i originally bought it and they said it might be the battery, but the charger itself stopped working before the computer did. Should I take it to a repair shop or just buy a new charger? I dont want to waste my money on repairs if a charger is all I need.
Whenever troubleshooting, if there are 2 different things that can fix the problem and one is cheaper you should always go that route first. Chances are it is your power adapter. Have it checked to make sure it is putting out the correct voltage at the correct amount of amps, remember Volts x Amps Watts you need the correct wattage being supplied to your computer in order for the battery to charge. The charger is also probably your cheapest route so i would definitely try it out first.
Take the charger and computer to an electronics repair shop and have them test the charger. They should not charge you anything if they are a reputable business. It takes about 3 to 5 minutes to check. If the charger is faulty then you will need a new one anyway, If the charger is working, then the laptop needs to be repaired. The laptop runs on a direct power connection to the computer and has a charging circuit separate for the battery. The laptop should be able to run without the battery connected and a good charger.
you can easily check the chargerwith either a voltmeter or a car light bulb. Voltmeter is better.about $8 for a cheapie at Radio shack 12 volt bulb will tell you if you are getting juice, but wont tell you how much. The charger will have a label telling you what it puts outa car bulb will handle up to 16 to 20 volts. If the charger is AC, not DC. you can still try it with a bulb, but be quick.
buy a new charger or one of you programs may be blocking it i dont really know im not there but buy a new chrger
