Question:

i have a 1994 saturn twin cam and earlier today the brake light came on.?

I put brake fluid in and the light went off for about 30 minutes then came back on. Just wondering what may be the problem. Also when the car is put in reverse it sometimes jerks before reversing or sometimes it rolls forward and I have to hit the brake and then try to reverse it, not sure what this problem is either. Oh yeah and I forgot the check engine light keeps coming on and off, and a few weeks ago I put in oil and then today I checked fluids and I had to put a whole thing of oil in because it was so low on oil. I am just a girl who knows nothing about cars and don‘t have $$ also if it helps someone answer this the car has about 200,000 miles on it. Please someone tell me what issue could be.

Answer:

The gears are not engaging automatically. The E-Brake cable might need to be adjusted
Lauren If you had to add brake fluid to the master cylinder reservoir means you're probably leaking brake fluid which can cause complete brake failure if master cylinder runs dry. Have your brake system checked by professional. Jerking while changing shifter into reverse, may indicate low transmission fluid or simply tired transmission (200,000) miles. Your Saturn may be leaking and or burning oil and thus requires constant oil level monitoring, have that looked after as well. Cheers
Well Lauren I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you must have a leak in the brake system somewhere for it to go out and come back on it 30 minutes. Check the fluid level again and fill it up if you need to then start the car and leave it in park and pump the brakes a few times. then look under the car for wet spots. If there is no wet spot you may have to pump it a few more times but also look under the hood and make sure it is not leaking around where you put the fluid in. If it is leaking you may have to take it to a garage or something because the brake system needs to be correct and should not be worked on by a novice for safety reasons. As far as the oil is concerned you can use an oil additive to condition the gaskets and seals to slow down the rate that it uses oil and also you can try running a thicker oil to help keep it in the motor. That vehicle is also known for a vacuum hose going bad between the valve cover and the intake manifold that makes the motor run bad and use oil. It is almost right in the center of the valve cover and intake and is only about 2.5 inches long. If it is cracked you should replace it. That will also make the check engine light come on and can make it have less power so it could make it sluggish too. Hope I have been helpful.
