I have tried squirting him with water when he does it, but I cant be on guard constantly, and he doesnt seem to connect the squirting with the scratching. He has plenty of other places to scratch but he doesnt seem interested in them. Is there any good solution to this problem? Ive been reduced to covering this rug with old blankets.
RRM38 IS RIGHT! DONT DECLAW YOUR CAT! It's barbaric and gruesome! It's illegal in most other countries! If you love your cat, you will clip its nails, and provide scatching posts! Declawing is unacceptable.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
The only you can stop your cat from scratching at the rug is get your cat declawed thats the only way.I have a cat that loves to scratch at the door when spray her with water it didn't work so spraying your cat with water it won't work.
Crystal is WRONG. DO NOT DECLAW YOUR CAT! Anyway, I had this problem and it is since 100% fixed. What I did: Go to a pet supply store or some large grocery store chains have a big pet section and get 2-3 of those CARDBOARD SCRATCH POSTS/BOXES. And get a bag of loose cat nip. Bring home your boxes and put one in your room, one in the living room, one in a 3rd room, and sprinkle them with a little cat nip. Show your cat how to scratch it by putting her paws on the box and doing a scraping motion with her paws. And she will fall in love with the scratch boxes and you will have good carpet. Worked for me!!! My cats never scratch the carpet now.
