I am needing to start at the point of where the water comes into the home, tees to the bathrooms and kitchen areas. I want to replace with something other than galvanized metal pipe, possibly CPVC pipes and Shark Bite fittings. am I over my head or is there a simple solution for a DIYer

Your cat is probably just fine. Be sure the cardboard box is protected from rain/snow so it doesn't get wet. You could also spoil him a little more by adding some insulation around his house. And be sure his water source doesn't freeze up.
Open the windows and put on a fan. Get fresh air into the house asap. Then call the 911 number and ask what to do. Call the gas and electric co emergency number. You should be OK with the windows open and the fans on. Did it only happen when you were running the air conditioner? After your house has fresh air coming in it try the alarms again. Be sure to try them by your babies rooms. Be sure to call 911 and ask them if it's safe to stay. Thank God you had the 2 Detectors going. The problem usually is when there are no detectors and then you would have no idea that there was a problem until it was too late.
