A minor point. In terms of their ability to transfer power, a gear is better than a chain drive and a chain drive is better than a belt. In terms of efficiency, again it is gear drive, chain drive, belt drive. As to a given application, the choice depends on several factors from load, to the need for reliability, to cost, to the environment in which the device will operate.
