Iron exists in 2 forms called Ferrous and Ferric. The numeral 2 represents the valency of Ferrous iron and 3 represents the valency of Ferric iron. Valency is the ability to react. Ferrous nitrate has 2 nitrate radicals while Ferric nitrate has 3 nitrate radicals to a single atom of iron.
