Question:

Iron level is low .age 51 need to get iron up but how?

I‘m 51 years old my iron level has dropped down to a nine which the doctor says is very bad,but I have been taking iron pills trying to eat foods high in iron is there anything else I could try?

Answer:

Oral Iron supplementation and an iron rich diet will bring up your iron levels and hemoglobin with time. There is not much else you can do other than determine the source of iron loss and stop it if possible. Taking Iron with orange juice improves the absorption. If people have difficulty absorbing oral iron, then sometimes intravenous Iron infusions are given. This is only if someone does not improve with a trial of oral iron. I am not sure if you are male or female. If you are female, do you still have menstrual periods? The only way iron is lost from the body is through bleeding and this is most commonly with menses in woman or through the gastrointestinal tract. If you are a postmenopausal woman or a man, then it is important to have screening for colon cancer because this can be a cause of Iron Deficiency. Colonoscopy is the best test.
Some people take this liquid iron and herb supplement called Floradix Floravital iron+herbs for low iron. Women like to take it too, due to loss of blood during that awesome time of the month.
It is often difficult to tell which blood test a person is asking about. I wonder if your reading of 9 is your hemoglobin. If so 9 would be diagnostic of anemia but not which type of anemia. If a person is suspect of having iron deficiency anemia the serum iron is not the proper test but rather the ferritin. A ferritin of 9 would be low. Thus the answer to your question is whether or not you have anemia and what type of anemia. If you have a low ferritin anemia the solution is a prescription for one of a variety of ferritin replacements such as ferrous sulfate. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you the very best of health and in all things may God bless.
