Question:

Is a boiler supposed to work this way?

My boiler kicks on and off until it reaches the set temperature, Is this normal or should it stay on until the set temp? I have hot water radiators.

Answer:

When your thermostat calls for heat the burners will light and the circulator pump will come on. When the boiler reaches its high limit temp setting (usually about 190 degrees), the burners will go off but the circulator pump will continue to run until the t-stat is satisfied. If the t-stat does not satisfy before the temp of the water falls below about 175 degrees then the burners may come back on to keep up the temp of the water. But it is normal for it to come on and off, but as long as there is a call for heat the circulator pump will run.
Don't know, but mine does the same thing, so if yours is broken, so is mine. Seems to be fine.. We've lived in this house for about 2 years, and it's always done that.
No. Your thermostat might be defective, but there is a better chance it is getting a draft from somewhere, like an opening/closing door; or, it is subject to on/off heat from another source such as near a fireplace. You might relocate the thermostat elsewhere.
