Question:

Is my dryer vent helping to cause ice dams on my roof?

I have a dryer vent that exit the house about 5 feet (ground level) below the roofI have ice dam problems all around the house because of old, inadequate insulation, but the worst damming occurs directly above the dryer vent and I'm getting water leaking from the ceiling onto my dryerThe roof is pitched very shallow in this area also, which of course doesn't help mattersShould I extend the dryer venting further away from the side of the house so the hot air doesn't rise up next to the eaveOr des it even matter?

Answer:

Good God, did you forget the RV because you may need one to put all that crap in it! Is it that cold at night, leave the heater.you have a boy friend for thatleave the grill cheese griller.you taking electricity? dont take anything camping that you dont want ruined by fire.like baking sheets dont you have sticks in PA for the marshmellows.even your hot dogs can be cooked on an open fire with a stick Leave the Bug Lantern and get a can of Yard Guard instead! Sorry guess I might be a little too rough on youI am a minimalist when it comes to camping, the more you pack the more you have to unpack and then repack.oh and then unpack again when you get home! its quite the productionDont for get your toiletries: toilet paper, shampoo conditioner in one if possible, tooth brush and paste, comb or brush etcbf is not gonna want to kiss you if you dont brush your teeth Here is a link for rules and regs for PA state parksTry page ten of the document.
A dutch oven or two, shovel, axe or hatchet, charcoal and lighter fluid/charcoal chimney, insect repellant, sunscreen, sleeping bag pad, towelsTake toilet paper, you don't want to discover the public restroom is out of paper, or equipped with John Wayne Toilet Paper I suggest you mix the dry ingredients of biscuits, substituting powdered milk for whole milk, and pack it in a ziplock bag or plastic containerThen add milk or water to make your biscuit dough, then cook them in the dutch ovenOr you can mix your biscuits , roll them out cut them and freeze themStore them in a freezer bag in your ice chest until you are ready to cook themDoc

Well, I have never seen that happenBut, your theory sounds logicalI would say that either extending the vent or putting a 45 fitting on the vent and directing the hot air towards the ground would be worth tryingThe water leaking from your ceiling concerns meObviously the ice is backing up under your shingles and permeating your roof sheathingThat is a problem you need to address when the weather permitsYou should examine that area of the roof for leaks and water damage and repair as neededAnd you should consider adding insulation, when you are able, to the attic.
