Question:

mixing stock speakers with other speakers?

I want to add some new speakers to my car, and I don't know the name of them, but all I know is that they're by Boston Acoustics, and they have midbass and tweeters. I was wondering if I could add those along with my stock speakers? Or should I replace the stock speakers with them? I want to keep the stock speakers but idk if mixing stock with aftermarket speakers will kind ofidk, clash and sound crappy.

Answer:

Well it would sound better. Lots of people just upgrade one pair and leave the other stock. I wouldnt recommend it though. Just replace all of your stock interior speakers with new, upgraded ones. PS when I first got my current car, I slapped some JL coaxials in the back--- it sounded a lot better, but MUCH quieter/less loud. The stock speakers were small, crappy, and pretty efficient. I amped the back speakers, and now they scream. Just something to think about.
its better to just replace all the stock speakers and the head unit if you can, the sound will be more balanced You don't have to have expensive speakers for the rear thoughjust ones that will handle added power and that have a tweeter will work, they should also have similar voicing to the Bostons though depending on how accurate you want the sound to beI replaced my front speakers in my car first and keep the rear ones stock for about 2 months, I never heard the rear speakers after replacing the front ones though and when I finally replaced the rears I only noticed a little more bass and sometimes some ambient sounds from the tweeters but not too much else, but I also replaced the head unit with an after market head unit right away that really helped the sound more than anything. those Bostons are designed to sound there best with an after-market head unitthe aftermarket units have less distortion and more power which you will notice because the speakers are more accuateI would replace the head unit first that will even make the stock speakers sound better.
I agree with replacing all factory speakers because of sound staging issues and when you turn up the volume you will get a very muddy sound from the back speakers where your front speakers will be crystal clear. If you want better results just upgrade to a aftermarket HU as it will definately get the full potential out of stock speakers. Stock Head Unit to aftermarket speakers never plays out well as you didnt solve the problem because the Stock Headunit is limited in power and the ability to equalize what your speakers are playing meaning if the bass sounds muddy you can lower the bass a little bit so it sounds cleaner and louder.
The biggest problem or concern is matching the impedance of your speakers to your amplier impedance. Speakers can be connected different ways to acomplish this -- series or parallel or seriesparallel . Your amp or radio probably has an output impedance of 4 to 8 ohms typically and this must be matched or the power transfered to the speakers will be screwed up and could cause damage to the amplifier . I have seen some neat sounding speakers using a bunch of different speakers over the years ---- I remember one called the sweet 16 which used 16 - 4inch speakers in a seriesparallel arrangement and sounded good. Have fun.
