Question:

my windshield wipers stopped working!?

ok so my wipers stopped working right! when i start the car and turn them on they go up but they don‘t come back down. if i push on them a little bit they will go back down but when they come up again they get stuck. does anybody know whats wrong? i have a 94 buick skylark. thank you!

Answer:

If they go back down with a push, then the motor is getting power. Chances are there is a bad circuit in the wiper motor. It has a contact in it that allows it to go back down after the switch is shut off. When that goes bad, sometimes the wipers won't return down even with the switch on. You can check at the wiper motor with a multimeter, check to see if power is still going to the motor when it sticks. Make sure the ground to the motor is good, it may be that the motor is shifting slightly and losing contact when it does. If you can't do the work yourself, take it to a mechanic that you trust.
General Motors windshield wiper motors have a circuit board that commonly malfunctions. Not sure if that model is replaceable. My source checked three different places for your year/make/model and didn't return any results. You may also have a dead spot in the motor. Aftermarket motors are about $60. Best of Luck
Sometimes if the bolts that hold them down (at the bottom) are loose, then they can get stuck, especially at the top (were friction is highest due to the angle and the bolt is not tight enough to overcome it). Strangely enough, the same problem can occur if they are too tight (the friction just becomes so high that it's too powerful for the small wiper motor to overcome). Over-tightening them can break the plastic, but if this is what's wrong, then a mechanic should be able to do it in a matter of seconds. I used to have this problem, and each time they came loose, a different mechanic fixed it temporarily for me (none of them charged me). Eventually I just started carrying a wrench because my financial situation wasn't good enough to have it really fixed permanently.
