Question:

Plastic surgery debate?

Tomorrow I am doing my bioethics debate for school and I already have my opening speech. However, I'm finding it a bit more difficult to think of the required 10 prepared questions for the opposing side. I have to argue pro-plastic surgery. No, we didn't get to pick our topic nor our side. Ideas? Suggestions? Help?!

Answer:

Pro-plastic surgery 1. corrects birth defects (cleft palate, the dolphin girl) 2. provides a sense of normalcy after cancer (mastectomy and breast reconstruction) 3. prevents stigma (for example, in some societies people might be stigmatized if their appearance is different) 4. provides a boost in self-image for those who elect to have it 5. represents a fountain of youth for aging men and women (e.g., face lifts etc.) 6. my guess is 100s of 1000s of surgeries are performed complication-free each year 7. chances are new medical techniques have been discovered as the field of plastic surgery progressed I suppose there are questions associated with these points. It would depend on what the other side was arguing..
1: What will we do without dental reconstruction ,it helps us to to be able to eat our food, not just for cosmetic purposes. 2What will happen to burn victims without plastic surgery? Without it many will die off secondary infections. 3: Accident victims, what will happen to them, plastic surgery helps many to have a longer healthy and productive lives. 4: Is plastic surgery not useful when it comes to the separation off Siamese twins? 5: Birth defects .Why can plastic surgery not be used to fix cleft upper lips if it helps the person to be able to eat properly. 6: Bone diseases cause many life threatening situations, what will we do without plastic surgery to correct this? 7: Victims off cancer.Doesn't plastic surgery help these people to get wounds fixed like in the case off throat cancer which otherwise could let them die. Isn't plastic surgery necessary to treat skin cancers. What about breast reconstruction for cancer victims? 8: what about victims that had bad surgery from bad doctors, which has now to be corrected? 9:Plastic surgery for cosmetic purposes. Isn't the sycological impact very important for people with some deformity to lead normal productive lives. Doesn't plastic surgery gives this people hope and a life? 10: Shall we let victims off war and crimes live the mental and physical scars. If we can try to help them mentally by fixing them physically, why not with the help off plastic surgery?
