lightning rods are there to protect the house if its properly installed then its saving the house the rod is a metal rod usually like a weather vain.. and its placed at the TOP OF THE HOUSE.. very peak this is wired to the ground with a VERY THICK WIRE usually like the wire used for hydro feeds to the house and this is fed outside the house right to the ground outside a stake is usually driven into the ground 6 feet or more or sometimes it could be connected to the plumbing before the meter of the water intake this would use the pipes feeding you water as a GROUND .. WHAT THIS does is makes the top of the house very LOW VOLTAGE SAME AS THE ground of the earth but since its 40 feet higher .. if a cloud travels overtop your house the lightning may spark see this as the shortest path..the reason for the lightning rod is to keep the house from getting hit the house itself is NOT HIT its the metal rod attached to it.. the lightning then travels down the thick wire to the ground and is disappated safely.. if the lightning rod is connected up there WITHOUT a wire then its harmless and will not attract the lightning .. if it is SITTING IN THE ATTIC ITSSELF inside the building again its harmless because its surrounded by the house itself and not connected to the ground so its not MORE negative than the house.. I have personally been in a building where a lightning strike hit the cable connection on the power line and it seems scarey but its better than being hit by the lightning itself and if the lightning rod is there and the house has been hit twice then it did its job because a house hit by lightning directly will be damaged SEVERely like the damage of a tree that is hit by lightning and its split in half.. conclusion IF ITS THERE AND PROPERLY INSTALLED ITS DOING ITS JOB AND ITS BETTER TO LEAVE IT if its not there and the man is a nut job then its not doing anything and its nothing to worry about either way DONT WORRY
Hi Shreya, Your question is difficult to answer without knowing whether your are trying to create a conceptual model or a working prototype. What you are trying to do is already widely used in homes and businesses via motion sensors to determine the presence of people, animals or other activity. See this article for an overview of the technology ~Here is an article which explains the basics of Face Detection ~ The major drawback to the system you are trying to devise is that it requires a system that is too complex and costly. You can already buy affordable sensors that convert an analog signal being read by the detector into a Digital state (On/Off) that is converted to the ON state by a microchip (tiny computer) that switches the circuit ON, it then activates a timer to reset the switch to OFF after a certain interval. When the interval on the time expires the circuit signals the detector to check for motion, heat, etc. Then, if nothing is detected changes the switch to OFF., otherwise it resets the timer to check again after another time interval. You can easily adapt a motion sensor, which is essentially a very primitive digital camera in most cases, to send its on/off signal to a computer to trigger a desired activity.
