I am a newbie and just bought a used road bike. Bike had a left crank arm that was worn thus it had a lot of play. The square taper bottom bracket uses a nut on a threaded spindle stud(fig 7) to hold crank arm. I went to local bike shop and showed them the old crank arm and they gave me a new crank arm. I tried installing new crank arm but it seems to be too tight. My question are: Is the crank arm supposed to be press fit into the bottom bracket? Or do I have the wrong size crank arm? Also from what I read online bottom brackets that use a threaded spindle are supposed to be of lesser quality that those that use are hollow and use a bolt instead of a nut(fig 5) If I decide to change bottom bracket how do I know which size or variety to purchase? Here is a link to the fig's I'm referring to:
yes its possible to do that one like that we added power locks and windows to my old dakota and it only cost me around 150 bucks for all the needed parts to do it with,if a dealer does this it may cost you more than your wanting to spend on it,i don't work at a dealer but you figure at about 75-90 bucks an hour labor and the parts ,it could cost several hundred to do that one,if it were me id go and get the parts from a salvage yard including the wiring harness and have someone that knows about electrical to help me wire them in and anyone who says it cant be done hasn't done it before, because it can be done, good luck with it.
