rear brakes locked up on 89 lincoln town car?

my rear brakes locked up on as i was going down the highway very dangerous the tow truck pushed me to the side of the road but it was hard after i sat there for a minute i was able to back up and drive for a minute then the brakes locked up again what is causing this please help any mechanics

Answer:

you might have a bad rear axle
you need to put the rear up on axle stands and pull both rear wheels to examine the brakes. You might have a problem with wheel bearings instead of brakes. If you have drum brakes there is usually a return spring that pulls the brake shoe off the drum when you let the brake pedal up , if thats damaged you can have all sorts of problems.
the most likely cause is the residual check valve in the master cylinder is clogged up with sludge from your brake system not being properly maintained and tended to. this valve when it sticks in the wrong position will cause your brakes to slowly apply going down the road until it stops the car. after the brakes cool slightly sometimes they will allow you to move again. residual check valves are only found on cars with drum brakes and most Lincolns of that era but not all are front disc and rear drum (some had 4 wheel discs but those are rarer cars.) to get car to a shop crack the rear brake line or bleeder screw to bleed off pressure this will release the rear brakes. have the Master Cylinder replaced and any other brake parts necessary at this time to make it like new Walt
