Should he insulate the attic? My son had an energy audit done on their 1920s colonial. Attic is largely floored over what appears to be vermiculite perhaps some added cellulose. Very little venting up there, only the gable windows (no soffit or ridge vents). The company that did the audit recommends he insulate the attic, turn it into heated space. This would mean putting insulation up against the roof, and on the walls at the roof ends.Does this make sense to forum experts? I thought the roof needed ventilation or it would deteriorate rapidly.

One of the best Chargers of the Muscle Car Era. First year for the 440 Six Pack in the Charger. On the street the 440 Six Pack could beat the Hemi.
Couple of answers in one; the wonderful 1920’s home was probably floored before it was insulated well. Any of the older insulation that was installed years gone by has most likely settled i.e. compacted and compacted insulation looses some of it’s “R” value and more insulation should be installed ( blown-in or bats your choice.) but it’s floored now and that makes for a lot of work unless you don’t plan to store things in the attic. One serious problem, the old insulation could also have asbestoses in it? If you plan on messing with it have it tested. Insulation on the ceiling of the attic a bit over kill, I believe you could do about the same thing if you vented the attic area better i.e. soffit ridge vents electric roof vent to let the hot air out. It’s heat build-up in the attic that shortens the life of the shingles. You’ve seen them before, the shingles start bowing / curling up at the ends, that’s to much heat in the attic. Homes old or new sometimes you just need to throw a little money at them.
Polystyrene is a well insulater, however there are special densities, i have no idea which you've, any manner the fine insulation is product known as kingspan, it is available in 8X4 sheets and also you reduce it to suit tightly among your roof trusses, you are going to must strip the plaster board off to try this, constructing rules dictate that there need to be a float of air round your roof trusses, accordingly you cant use rockwool or a pumped insulation, you need to use a pretty good insulation geared up in such away that it does no longer have compatibility almost the roof tiles. Good Luck
You are right proper ventilation is key. He needs to consult with an experienced roofing company to access the outside roof first. Measurements need to be taken. I would not turn the attic into living space if he has no real purpose for the space. It will be a waste of reno money beside his real estate taxes will increase. I do recommend cool ply sheets for the attic interior ceiling because it will save on his HVAC bills. Suggest to him that he contact the lumber yard in his community to recommend a local competent roofer then get numerous references and proof of insurance from the contractor before hiring.
Ah the famous MOPAR DEATH SUSPENSION. Many people had a lot of trouble with those front-ends as they can fail without warning. Back in those days a lot of people were killed when the front-ends failed at high speeds.
