Question:

SMG transmission?

how does the smg transmission work and whats the horsepower for the m3?

Answer:

I would agree with Gonzo.
SMG transmission has both automatic and manual shift modes. Inside the different modes there are different programs. The automatic programs range from A1 through A5, with the lower numbers representing slower and less aggressive shifts. The manual shift mode ranges from S1 through S6, again with S1 for slower shifts and S6 for the quickest and most aggressive shifts possible, SMG sequential manual gearbox;
HR Girl is right on. The SMG should be considered a MANUAL transmission that is computer controlled. It DOES have a clutch plate similar to any other manual transmission, but the clutch mechanism is activated electro-mechanically by computer control instead of by a clutch pedal. It can be also be shifted by the driver via paddles on the steering wheel that tell the comnputer to shift. This technology was originally developed and used in Formula 1 racing.
