Question:

sources of scrap aluminium?

i want to get hold of some aluminium for metal casting the problem is i don't know where to get it from.I have tried the local dump that have a metal recycling center and they refused and the local scrap yard which seems to be quite large,(the guy at the counter said all the Al goes into the Al waste and he wont put any aside however he did try to sell me a wheel.).there is nothing lying around my area and if there was metal collectors would come and take it (which there seems to be a lot of in my area). i have rang a metal fabricator and they offered ?3 per kg (which doesn't seem to be to bad but still 3x the price of scrap) does anyone know where i can get hold of some aluminium in harrow. or any metal recycling center which is willing to sell small quantity's of scrap Al to the public for cheap.

Answer:

Depending on what you want to cast you'll probably be better off avoiding scrap and going with metal shop. At least you know what you're getting. Scrap aluminum could be a great aerospace alloy or it could be cheap beer can. if you try melting down random scrap you'll have a ton of impurities to get rid of.
Beer cans and the likes. Enjoy
I am in the states but the way I would do it here is to track down the local junk men who pick this stuff up and buy the aluminum from him. Another possibility is to locate a manufacturing plant who makes aluminum parts and ask them if you can have some of their scrap or just buy some from them.Yet, another idea is to go around to the local farmers as some of them may have it lying aorund in their own scrap piles. Good Luck!
