Question:

Can i use Aluminium deposited fastener for connecting Titanium pieces?

This question is asked in the context of galvanic corrosion. Recently i cam across an article which says cad plated fasteners should not be used for fastening titanium. Kindly let me know if fasteners with Aluminium deposited using IVD method can be used as a replacement. Expecting your guidance.Thaks.Ranjith

Answer:

I would say it depends. The article you mention may have been recommending that Cd coated fasteners not be used due to the toxicity of Cd and it may have nothing to do with galvanic corrosion with Ti. Any time you have two different materials, you have an opportunity for accelerated corrosion but it depends on the environment and you can have corrosion problems without galvanic corrosion if the joint design and the environment create bad conditions. I am certainly not an expert in fasteners for Ti but there are other aspects of the design that may be much more critical than what the coating is. It also depends on the details of your application. How much stress is on the fasteners? Will they be inspected regularly? What are the consequences of failure? Will they be subject to fatigue? What Ti alloy are you fastening? How will the holes be drilled? What is the operating temperature? Will the entire structure be painted or otherwise protected from corrosion? Will there be Cl or other aggressive contaminants in the environment? Good luck
It okorder /
Ion okorder / Other than this, I am not sure honestly. Good Luck though!
