Question:

Transmission fluid leak causing hard shifts?

My car has been shifting hard lately and I thought it was leaking oil for a while but I have begun to think that it is transmission fluid. It overheated a couple months ago due to a water pump failure. Could this cause something to break in the transmission and make fluid leak? It‘s a ‘97 BMW 740i. Does anybody know if these cars are notorious for transmission problems? I hope I don‘t need to rebuild it.I‘ve heard it costs anywhere from 4 to 6 thousand dollars.Any information is helpful, thanks!

Answer:

You wont need to rebuild it. What it sounds like is that your fluid could be low, or you have an air bubble in your tranny line somewhere. By shifting hard do you mean it jerks each time it goes into a new gear or it take a while to shift? I would take it to a local mechanic shop and have them take a look, somewhere like midas does free driving insepctions and things like that.
Low transmission fluid would cause hard shifts. Check the level and correct if needed. You may need a special fluid for your transmission, check the owners manual to be sure. If the car overheated it is possible that the transmission got a bit warmer too since the transmission fluid is cooled by the cars cooling system. Don't think it would cause it to leak though.
if you drive a BMW then maybe you should ask the salesman that you gave 60.000 or more!
