Okay, so i flipped my 1996 Jeep Cherokee in a ditch. I‘m looking for a new vehicle and have found a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee at a low price because the transmission is blown. IF the transmission in my ‘96 still works, could I put it in the ‘97?
Here's the short story: No. Here's the long one if you're interested: If you're indeed talking about using an automatic transmission from a 1996 Cherokee (not a grand) and putting it in a 1997 Grand Cherokee, it may bolt together if they both have an inline 6 (4.0L) but you will have issues with the powertrain control module (PCM). The Cherokee has an Aisin-Warner AW-4 automatic transmission. BTW, this is the same transmission used in several rear wheel drive Toyota vehicles. The Grand Cherokee used a Chrysler 42RE transmission for the 4.0L and a 44RE for the 5.2L engine. All of these transmissions are electronically actuated by the PCM. I am quite certain you won't be able to get the AW-4 to interface with the PCM for a 42RE. If you can't, it won't shift properly in the forward gears, or won't shift to higher gears at all. It may be possible to swap PCMs, although, I'm not sure. If you did, you would have to change portions of the wiring harness to do so, which is something I'd strongly advise you not to so.
Exhaust alone doesn't accomplish much if you don't change your air cleaner and rejet.
you're good as long as same engines. two different trans used between the 4.0 (A500) and the bigger engine in the grand cherokee some of which are the (A518)
