Our 2,500 square foot home wastes a lot of heat. Is there a way to install dampers and a room thermostats to shut certain parts of the house down at night or when certain rooms are not in use? If so, what kind of cost / installation prices are we talking about? Thanks
you would probely be alright doing that in heating if you dont have a heat pump. but in cooling you would not want to shut down any of them ever. you could probely have it done for 3-$400 a room i would recomend putting in seperate systems

Your furnace / heat pump supply fan can only supply a constant volume of air. Closing ducts without providing a place for the excess air to go causes problems. Also if you have a furnace your heat exchanger needs a certain volume of air flowing through it or it will burn up. That being the case what you need is a zone damper system with a bypass. The bypass lets the excess air dump directly back to your return duct when the supply zone dampers start to shut down. Carrier, Trane and many other companies make these. They are pretty costly because they have zone dampers and thermostats for each zone, a bypass damper and associated connecting ductwork, a central controller and at least one duct pressure sensor. The cost would depend on the number of zones and difficulty of installation.
