Question:

wehavea1996chev.sub.1500thatwont come out of park, andwewantto know if it has a sencer on the brake system?

our 1996 chev.sub.1500,won‘t come out of park hardly, and we were wondering if ithad some kind of sencer that had gone out or somthing,on the brake system, andif not what can we do to make it come out of park.

Answer:

Actually its a clip inside the steering colomn that is actuated when u push on the brake pedal. Try moving steering wheel side to side while applying the brake and shifting.
Dianne, if it comes out of park once in a while , I would definitely say the neutral safety switch has to be adjusted. Yes there is a sensor on the column, it's called Brake/Shift Interlock Solenoid (BITSI) First check fuse #16 20A in the instrument panel fuse box (left side of instrument panel) you'lll see a cover as soon as you open the driver's door. Replace if open. If OK, check power to brake light switch light green wire should be 12V with key ON ( If no power you need to adjust the neutral safety switch) If OK, Push down on the brake pedal and check for power at dark green/white wire .If you have power replace the brake light switch . OK now did you get all that.
