Question:

What are some unique things for young adults to do in Chicago?

We're young, we're gothic, and we're going to Chicago! Could someone please suggest some unique, off the beaten path things for us to do and see? We are looking for fun, casual dining, music, odd stores, cultureanything aside from the standard tourist fare.

Answer:

The battery is there for backup when the power goes out.Yes,it will still work with a dead battery as long as the power is on but if the power is out it needs a battery. Chirp equals dead/dying battery. Replace the battery.
I would simply replace the smoke alarm. It is too important to skimp. We had a house fire 4 years ago. We escaped and the fire dept arrived in time to save the house only because our cat woke us up. I had purchased some replacement smoke alarms for our broken alarms but had not installed them. Get the kind that have both photo electric and ionization sensors. they are inexpensive and and way too important to skimp on.
I'm going to agree with Mermiliz. My hardwired combo smoke CO detectors (Kidde brand) are designed with a seven-year life. After seven years, they start chirping to tell you to replace them. There's no fix. Save yourself trouble and expense: just replace them.
1. Map 2. Compass 3. Flashlight/headlamp (be sure to have an extra set of batteries that fit your flashlight/headlamp) 4. Extra food (enough for one extra day) 5. Extra clothing 6. Rain gear ( jacket and pants-always carry rain gear even if the sun is out) 7. First aid supplies (be sure to include an extra day of any medication you are taking or might need in an emergency) 8. Pocket knife 9. Matches (stored in a water tight container in addition to matches or a butane lighter) 10. Fire starter (can be candles, chemical fire starter, backpack size fire logs)
Not only do smoke detectors chirp when their battery is low, but they also chirp when the detector becomes degraded and needs replacing. Although yours is hard wired, it does have a battery backup in it. So you will have to climb up there and replace the back up battery first to see if that cures the chirping. then if it will not stop chirping, then it means that the detector itself has gone south for warmer climate. Time to replace the unit, then! Second thoughts: Since you have to drive so far, I would suggest that you go there with a new one in hand and short cut your time by just replacing the unit and be done with it!
