Question:

What does copper smell like?

I would like to know what the smell of copper is and please if you know the anser then put what your source is.

Answer:

Absolutely pure copper would have no smell (odor) since copper has no volatility at room temp. What we probably smell are copper oxides that form on the surface of the penny and inhale when you try to smell it. You can also be smelling oils and grease from your hands when you hold the penny and parts of the penny you rub off into your hand. Try an experiment. Take some new and some old pennies. Have someone else place them on a table and just using your nose, bend down and smell them, NO HANDS. Then walk away for a few minutes and come back. This time pick the pennies up and smell them. Then rub the pennies between you fingers and then smell. I think you will find old picked up rubbed pennies have more smell. You may have to wash your hand each time you get a definite smell. Now the catch to this is that pennies have little copper. They are mostly zinc. Are we smelling copper oxides or zinc oxides. That is another experiment. You could also use a clean new piece of copper pipe from a hardware store. That would eliminate the zinc factor.
