i need to know,my lecturer told me it means a connect that can only be inserted in 1 way only.but being a sound engineering course i don't get what cable wouldn't be polarized.the XLR/cannon connector is polarized but what about a normal jack it can only be inserted one way
It simply means that the plug is designed so it can only be plugged in one way. Like the newest US type power cords have the common side on a plug and wall outlet has a wider blade than the hot side, so the plug can only be inserted one way.
It means the plug has no backwards. Most of the connectors used in pro-audio (that I seen), are polarized by nature. That includes TRS, XLR, Speakon, and AC power (twist-lock and two and more prong straight blade.)

In this sense it means that the connectors in question are different enough in design that plus will connect only with plus minus will connect only with minus. Many (US) AC connectors are not polarized.
