Question:

What foods contain significant levels of iron?

I am borderline-anemic, so my iron is barely at a healthy level. I have been taking vitamins to boost my iron, but no such luck. My question is, what types of food are iron-rich? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. THANKS!

Answer:

I think per calories, egg whites (vegetarian but not vegan) have the most protein. Very lean tuna and chicken, and some protein powders are close enough that I'm not entirely sure. Nuts do not contain as much protein as chicken when eaten in equal amounts. Furthermore, the amino acid breakdown of chicken makes it a more complete protein.
I have the same problem and take pills and such, but if that doesn't work, red meat like steak has a lot of iron. Look at the nutrition facts on food and see if the food has iron.
To boost the amount of iron in your diet, try these foods: * Red meat * Egg yolks * Dark, leafy greens (spinach, collards) * Dried fruit (prunes, raisins) * Iron-enriched cereals and grains (check the labels) * Mollusks (oysters, clams, scallops) * Turkey or chicken giblets * Beans, lentils, chick peas and soybeans * Liver * Artichokes Also consume lots of Vitamin C so your body can better absorb the Iron, take Iron supplements (according to directions, you can be poisoned if you take too much) and cook your food in a cast iron pan.(which has other benefits like being non-stick, lasting forever and holding heat evenly)
