Answer:

Rear end fluid is a heavy, (80/90wt.), sulphur based oil that is generally refered to as GearLube, most vehicles go through their entire life, without the rearend fluid ever even being checked, not to mention being changed, if you'd like to check it, simply remove the plug with the square hole in it, from the differential housing, if the fluid runs out when you remove the plug, then it's filled perfectly, if it doesn't, then buy a bottle of 80/90 Gearlube and squirt it into the hole until it starts to overflow, replace the plug and you're good to go, there really is no need to completely change the fluid, it's good for the life of the vehicle.By the way, the tool to remove the fill plug is just the sqare drive end of a 3/8 ratchet handle, hope this helped you out. Rear axle fluid also known as Gear oil is usually a lifetime oil and never needs changing and is found in rear wheel drive vehicles or 4X4 vehicles in the front end as well as the transfer case. Some vehicles such as chevrolet have limited slip rear ends that take a special additive that keeps slippage and chatter to a minimum. There is a plug on the side of most rear ends that you remove to check the level of this fluid by seeing it either drip out when the plug is removed or you can stick your finger in the hole and touch the fluid. If you can touch it the level is correct. If the vehicle has high mileage such as 80,000 and above you may want to change it as a preventive maintnace service. There are different weights or viscosity of the gear oil so make sure you put the proper one in for your particlar vehicle.
Rear axles have bearings and gears, and therefore need a lubricant. This is known as gear oil. It should be changed every 60k miles. The normal wear of gear teeth meshing together adds metal to the gear oil. There is a permanent magnet in the rear end to draw the material out of the oil, but it can only get so much of it, plus the oil breaks down over a period of time. Thus the 60k service interval. If it is never changed, the risk of that metal in the oil accelerating gear and bearing wear increases dramatically with added mileage. The rear ends that are limited slip type have clutches in the carrier, add to the material in the oil, and normally require a special additive to the normal gear oil, called a friction modifier, to prevent the binding of the clutches. Servicing the rear end won't change the acceleration of your car, but it certainly will add to the life of it!
