Hi :) I am renovating my kitchen. I would like to go with a dark wood for the floor. What choice will provide the longest and toughest life for the floor ? Basically, whats best for a kitchen floor ? Thanks !
As one poster stated, there is no best wood for a kitchen. You do need one with a Janka Rating ( hardness test scale ) of 1000 or higher. This will include oaks and up. Janka hardness will help if some things dropped on the flooring. Water, foot traffic and wear and tear in equal on almost any hard wood. Your top coats and day to day care is the most important thing for any wood. And avoiding excess water upon the floor, a killer for any wood. Ant questions you can e mail me through my avaatr. GL
You would be better with a wood floor that is sanded and finished on site (or at least oiled or lacquered after fitting) as there is a lot less chance of a water spill seeping through the joints in the flooring. Don't be worried by the above negatives for kitchen floors, wear is not an issue with the right finish. I have installed many engineered floors in bars and pubs with no problems and your kitchen floor is never going to take that pounding. Hope this helps
Simply put, there is NO best! Kitchen wood floors are subject to abrasion and need to be resurfaced periodically. Depending on the abrasion, it may be as simple as stripping and applying a coat of finish or sanding clear down to the wood and completely refinishing the wood.
