Question:

What is the fine for not having a smoke detector installed in your home?

We're currently renting a house that has 2 basement suites. We have the upstairs and are paying $1150 a month. We noticed there isn't a smoke detector anywhere to be seen in the house. And the only fire extinguisher is all the way downstairs, and that's the only one in the entire household. What is the fine our landlord would have to face if there isn't a smoke detector installed? We live in Alberta.

Answer:

The paint contains specially designed tiny reflectors. This same technology is used in the reflective materials put on clothing, sneakers and other items for safety at night. Different companies have different formulas but they all follow the same basic idea.
They are made of a highly reflective material that reflects light. It is more effective than using electricity to light them up.
The problem with a BC extinguisher that will take care of grease fires and is safe with electricity is that it is too small to take care of a wastebasket or similar fire and the way the chemical comes out it tends to scatter the burning stuff so you need more capacity. If you go back to shopping, you will find that the numbers will be like 1A3BC which means it has the lowest rating for A but 3 times the rating for BC and will be bigger. If you can keep track of it, you should be able to put out most paper fires with a glass or pot of water. Burning paper with grease on it or in a pan of grease needs the B type and the paper should not be blown around because of the weight of the grease. You will have to decide about taking it back.
Make it yourself! You can buy gasket material at the hardware store and cut it to fit. There is neoprene, cork and rubber to fit your need.
